Growing Up with Music in Awoshie

Some people discover music later in life, but for Broni, music was there right from the start. Born on 21 December 1996 in Accra to Charles Kwame Broni and Anita Quao, with family roots in Akyem Oda in Ghana's Eastern Region, Broni grew up in Awoshie surrounded by warmth, family and endless melody.

Raised primarily by his maternal grandparents — a deacon grandfather and a loving grandmother who provided the church communion — his home was always filled with song. With his mother, aunt and uncle all singing in the church choir, Broni's earliest memories were shaped by sweet gospel harmonies.

One day, hearing young Broni sing in the living room, his grandfather smiled and gave him a glowing compliment in Ga: "Ola oo!" — meaning "You really sing!"

At Ave Maria School, Broni was a naturally shy kid, but music became his ultimate way to connect and shine. He took school talent shows very seriously, constantly watching, listening and learning from legendary Ghanaian highlife pioneers like Nana Ampadu, Daddy Lumba and Ofori Amponsah, alongside global icons like Michael Jackson, Chris Brown, Justin Bieber and Chronixx. Even at a young age, when Broni sang in church, his voice was so soulful and touching that it brought people to tears — a true sign of the special gift he carried.

The Moment Everything Changed: “Purple” & Breaking Through

Broni went on to attend Mfantsipim School, where joining the drama club sparked his love for acting and storytelling. Around 2014–2015, his music journey took an exciting leap when he teamed up with his late friend and talented rapper, Eli Ross (rest his soul), to record a cover of Chris Brown's New Flame. The song became an instant favourite among high school students, giving Broni his first real taste of what it felt like to capture an audience.

Determined to pursue his dream full force, Broni chose to dive straight into music over university. That leap of faith led him to Money Three Studios, where magic was waiting. During a power outage one afternoon, producer and guitarist LEXYZ was sitting outside on the porch playing his guitar. Broni joined in just to pass the time and started singing Sam Smith's Stay With Me.

Standing nearby were music video director Prince Dovlo and producer Arny Mony. Hearing Broni's incredible voice wafting from the porch, Arny Mony knew right away that they had found someone special. He immediately cast Broni in Purple — Ghana's very first musical film.

The movie turned out to be a massive hit, featuring top stars like Sarkodie, Efya, Sister Deborah, Pappy Kojo and Versa. Broni's performance and music stole the show, earning him the Ghana Movie Award for Best Original Song in 2016. Watch the moment. Shortly after, he dropped his hit single Ekomedeme. The track was so good that rap icon Sarkodie jumped on the remix, officially launching Broni into national stardom.

Reinvention & Reclaiming His True Self

Every artist goes through moments that reshape their soul and unlock a higher level of greatness. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Broni experienced the painful loss of his father, Charles Kwame Broni (rest his soul). Going through such a challenging season led him to look deep within, reconnect with God, and tap into a new inner force.

This spiritual rebirth brought powerful new beginnings. Reconnecting with his old friend Nana Goldman, who stepped in as his manager, Broni began completely reinventing his sound with a clearer purpose. Supported by his team Kwamena and Eben T, along with deep family and community connections made in Kumasi, Broni emerged as his truest, most authentic self — full of renewed focus and unstoppable positive energy.

This vibrant new era produced hits like Memphis Depay, a track that caught global attention and earned direct praise and love from international football star Memphis Depay himself.

"My whole journey has been about sharpening and understanding this gift of music… It's meant to fill people with a positive spirit, a clear mind, and make them realize they can strive for more."
